They provided excelant instructions for finding the property plus extra details about the area because we arrived on a Sunday and all shops etc are closed, Welcoming hosts, a log burner for cool evenings, outstanding “eating out” within a three mile radius. There were a few items which were missing such as oven gloves and bathmat and we informed the owner who will talk to her cleaning staff to address this and the cleaning issues. The seating inside was adequate but was in need of upgrading. The beds were very comfortable and the linen pristine but the overall cleaning of the property was below what you would expect. There is a small decked area with some very flimsy seating and small table which we didn't risk using.
The area outside the cottage is rough grass and overgrown shrubbery but on the plus side there is a lovely view down to the loch. This should be highlighted in the description. There is a very steep path down to the cottage from the parking area which would not be suitable for anyone with even minor mobility issues and it can be a slog ferrying your belongings from the car and back up the hill at the end of your stay. In my opinion it is overpriced for what you get. The cottage is nice but definitely not "luxury". The area is beautiful and we had a lovely week exploring. Or if you want a bit of urban bustle, you can soon be in Fort William (24 miles via the Corran Ferry), shopping, catching the West Highland Line steam train to Mallaig, swimming at the leisure centre, climbing Ben Nevis or, in winter, ski-ing at Aonach Mhor. Just over half an hour's drive from Strontian you can be in Lochaline, where yet another half hour will whisk you across on the little ferry to Fishnish on Mull. From Mallaig, you can catch the ferry over to Skye - the crossing only takes half an hour. There is an excellent golf course there at Traigh (the name means Shore which says it all). If you turn right at Salen you can carry on up to Mallaig past the silver sands of Morar and the incomparable views of Rum and Eigg from Arisaig. Fishing is available locally, there are boat trips from Acharacle, sandy beaches and secluded coves at Sanna at the end of the peninisula, or visit the Stevenson lighthouse at Arnamurchan Point. Walkers will doubtless head for the hills - Ben Resipol is the nearest peak - while others may prefer gentler strolls through the woods on the shores of the loch. The first official distillery on Jura was built in 1810 but there is evidence that illicit distilling took place as far back as 1502! It has been expanded over the years but still occupies the same site, draws its water from the same natural source and remains the only distillery on the island.This is a superb place to relax and do as little or as much as you want. The gardens boast a stunning of array of antipodean plants, which is quite an amazing sight in rural Scotland! Those on the Whisky Trail will want to visit the Isle of Jura Distillery in Craighouse, which produces a light malt whisky. Keep a keen eye out for adders although it is said that they will move out of your way if they see you first! For those not interested in climbing the Paps, a visit to Jura House is strongly recommended. However, the upper slopes are mainly made of scree so it is recommended to wear good walking boots. Walking is the order of the day on Jura and one can climb The Paps of Jura which takes about 8 hours.
